Traveling and art are a symbiotic combination –– at once stimulating, nourishing and often unsettling. To experience oneself in an unknown setting, to record sensations in a myriad of forms and media –– this is how art can provide the means for the attentive traveler.

This workshop is designed with both the inner and outer traveler in mind and explores experimental drawing and painting techniques, emphasizing art as a discovery process.   We will make books, constructions and small shrines devoted to the celebration of, "the closer we look, the more we see."

Instruction, through demonstration and group exercises, may include making a personal travel journal, drawing, writing and collage, according to the interests of the group.

There will be field trips to the local market and beaches to gather and absorb the special indigenous flavors, nuances and conversations, returning to the studio to learn new techniques in both writing and visual forms.

Participants will bring a small art kit (see below), and other basic materials will be provided.  Suitable for all levels.  No previous experience is necessary, just a willingness to experience yourself and your surroundings anew.

Participants Should Bring:

ART KIT:
Materials are limited to what you can travel with easily.
Here are suggestions for what to include in your art kit:

· scissors and small utility knife (retractable blade)
· glue stick, scotch tape
· small bottle for water (for painting outdoors)
· small bottle for gesso (you can fill it from our studio supply)
· drawing pencils and/or pens and/or markers and/or colored pencils
· paint brushes: some small, some larger
· small water color set or set of markers
· packet of blank postcards for water coloring
· sketch book/s in sizes you are comfortable with
· notebook and pens for writing
· a convenient bag to carry your supplies in
· a white outfit
· photos of your work or copies of a special poem
as gifts to share with the group

Optional:

· small set of acrylic paints, gels & mediums
· camera
· small mat to sit on outdoors

Feel free to add other materials you enjoy working with, such as rubber stamps, textiles, and photos.  You should be able to gather ample collage material on the island.

I recommend having one sketch book that measures at least 9” x 12”.
Some may prefer working on a portfolio of loose papers.

In choosing your supplies, think PORTABLE and think COMPACT.

Do arrive with your supplies in hand. There will be time for shopping during the week,
but you’ll want to be prepared to start on the first day. Only limited art supplies are available locally.

Materials supplied:

· gesso
· some paper
· bookbinding needles and thread
Optional:

· shellac
· denatured alcohol
· rags
· some brushess
