La Serrania Odysseys: On Mallorca- by Carolyn Miller

Carolyn Miller is a book editor and writer who has published both poems and short stories and has taught college classes in creative writing. She has two full-length collections of poetry forthcoming in 2001 and 2002 and has worked with a group doing new-writing seminars for more than ten years.

Nothing will ever be the same, they said,
and it is true. Even on a beach in Mallorca,
far from my country, I see the towers falling
and the smoke still rising from Manhattan.

It is true. Even on a beach in Mallorca,
an island born from the bed of the sea,
the smoke still rises from Manhattan,
and the world where we were safe has disappeared.

On an island born from the bed of the sea,
in a land of light and birds and sheep bells,
the world where we were safe has disappeared.
The water is clear: blue, aqua, turquoise, cobalt.

The sun moves behind cliffs of uplifted limestone.
Far from my country, I see the towers falling
in a land of light and birds and sheep bells.
Nothing will ever be the same, they said.
